General obstetrics and gynecology is practiced by obstetrician/gynecologists with appointments in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. Our obstetrician/gynecologists work out of 10 different hospitals in Hamilton, Burlington, Brantford, Niagara, Kitchener-Waterloo and surrounding areas.
We provide a broad spectrum of clinical services to women of all ages. We practice evidence-based medicine and deliver care in a kind, compassionate manner. The primary goal is to provide excellent clinical care and we are highly committed to the education and training of our medical students and residents.

Dr. Stephen Bates earned his medical degree from McMaster University in 1979 and entered a residency in family medicine. In 1984, he completed his residency in obstetrics and gynecology and began his general practice in obstetrics and gynecology, including colposcopy, laser surgery of the genital tract, hysteroscopy, endometrial ablation and operative laparoscopy. In 1994, he completed his MSc in clinical epidemiology and biostatistics at McMaster University.
In addition to his practice in Brantford, Dr. Bates has dedicated his career to education, working as a Clinical Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at McMaster University.
AWARDS
His teaching of health professionals at all levels has earned him numerous awards including the Association of Professors of Obstetrics and Gynecology (Canada) Educator of the Year Award in 2006, the Faculty of Health Sciences Undergraduate MD Program Outstanding Preceptor Award in 2007 and the 2008 CREOG National Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education.

After completing her BSc in biochemistry at the University of Toronto, Dr. Jean Chamberlain attended medical school at the University of Toronto. She earned her MD in 1991 and completed a rotating internship at Toronto East General Hospital in 1992. Upon completion of a Royal College Fellowship in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Western Ontario in 1996, Dr. Chamberlain joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. She completed her master of education at the University of Toronto (OISE) in 1998.
Dr. Chamberlain is also co-director of the McMaster International Women’s Health Program and founding director of Save the Mothers (STM) International, an organization dedicated to saving some of the 287,000 mothers who die in childbirth every year. Dr. Chamberlain is an internationally recognized expert in women’s health and is a member of the Order of Canada. Her work has earned her several awards including the 2006 International Community Service Award from the Federation of International Obstetricians/Gynecologists for her outstanding contribution to the health of mothers around the world.
Dr. Chamberlain also received the Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2009.
She has spent 12 years working in Uganda advocating for safe motherhood with Save the Mothers. Before her tenure in Uganda, she spent five years in Yemen as an obstetrician/gynecologist. While abroad, she maintained her academic position in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University. Currently, she is a professor at McMaster University with her clinical practice based out of St Joseph’s Hospital Hamilton.

After completing her BSc with honours at the University of Toronto in 1992, Dr. Ann Marie Chen began medical school at the University of Toronto. In 1996, she entered a residency in obstetrics and oynecology at McMaster University and, in 2001, joined the department.
Dr. Chen is an assistant clinical professor and active staff in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at Hamilton Health Sciences Corporation.

Dr. Dustin Costescu is an academic generalist, family planning specialist in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. Dr. Costescu completed his Bsc at the University of Guelph, his doctorate of medicine from the University of Western Ontario and his obstetrics and gynaecology residency at McMaster University. Dr. Costescu also completed a fellowship in contraception advice research and education from Queen’s University.
Clinical, Educational and Administrative Work
Dr. Costescu’s clinical practice focuses in contraceptive care, family planning, colposcopy and sexual medicine, in addition to general OB/Gyn complaints. Dr. Costescu teaches medical students, residents and allied health professionals in many of these areas, and is an invited lecturer locally, nationally and internationally as a family planning expert. Dr. Costescu is the current continuing education director for the department.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Costescu’s research focuses on contraception and family planning. Currently, the following areas are being investigated:
- Family planning need and contraceptive use in special populations
- Contraceptive decision-making
- Qualitative experiences of unintended pregnancy and abortion, both for women and men involved in the pregnancy

Dr. Christine DeJong is chief of obstetrics and gynecology at Joseph Brant Hospital and associate clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University.
In addition to obstetrics, Dr. DeJong has an interest in urogynecology and colposcopy.
After earning her BSc from Calvin College in 1987, Dr. DeJong attended graduate school at the University of Guelph, earning her MSc in 1989. In 1992, she graduated from McMaster University Medical School and entered a residency in obstetrics and gynecology.

Dr. Cara Donnery completed her bachelor of arts and science at McMaster University in 2000. She then went on to complete her medical degree in 2003 and residency in obstetrics and gynecology in 2008 at McMaster. A self-described “McMaster Lifer”, she was thrilled to join the department as a clinical scholar in 2008, before accepting a full-time academic position with the department in 2009. During her clinical scholar year, she focused on medical education completing both the basic and advanced clinical teaching certificates through the program for faculty development. She has also completed the faculty of health sciences academic leadership program. Dr. Donnery’s passion for mentoring and teaching has earned her several teaching awards including the CREOG Teaching Award for excellence in resident teaching and the APOG Carl Nimrod award. Her clinical practice is based out of St. Joseph’s Healthcare and focuses on general obstetrics, gynecology and colposcopy.

Dr. Marie-Josée Dubé was born in Québec City and moved to Montréal to obtain her cégep diploma at the renowned Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. She then completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in political science and studied public administration (health policies) at the graduate level, both at Laval University in Québec.
After having obtained her dedical doctorate at Laval University, she completed her post-graduate residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, in 2004. During her medical and gynecological training, she worked in Paris (France) and in Sousse (Tunisia- SOGC Fellowship and Berlex Grant). She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Dr. Dubé did a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, in Switzerland (2005). She has been an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University since 2006.
Her recent work interests revolve around colposcopy, advanced laparoscopic surgeries, hysteroscopy and family planning. Dr. Dubé had a special interest in teaching minimally invasive surgical techniques to the residents of the program and to gynecologists in and around the Hamilton region. She was actively involved in the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS) sessions for junior and senior residents.

Dr. Susan Ellis is an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University and chief of the Department and Active Medical Staff at St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Ellis’s dedication to education has earned her several awards, including the McMaster Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Certificate of Excellence for Sustained and Continuous Pursuit of Excellence in Obstetrical Teaching.
In 2014, she attended the Mayo Clinic for Instructor Development: Simulation-Based Education Design and Debriefing. She led the development of the postgraduate simulation program and is a dedicated simulation educator and researcher. In her role as chief, her team implemented an interprofessional and multidisciplinary in-situ simulation program.

After earning her BSc with distinction at the University of Western Ontario in 1998, Dr. Nirupa Gangam began medical school at Queen’s University. In 2002, she entered a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University and in 2008 she completed a clinical scholarship in obstetrical and gynecological ultrasound.
Dr. Gangam is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University, active staff at St. Joseph’s Hospital and a member of the Gynecologic Quality of Care Committee at St. Joseph’s Hospital in Hamilton.

Dr. Aseel Hamoudi is an academic generalist in the Department of Obstetrics& Gynecology at McMaster University. Dr. Hamoudi completed medical school in Iraq and did her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Toronto. She also completed a fellowship in high risk obstetrics from the University of Toronto and a masters in health science education from McMaster University.

In 2006, he graduated Summa Cum Lauda from Harvard University with a master’s of health care management. Dr. Leyland joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University as an associate clinical professor in obstetrics and gynecology in 2009. On July 1, 2010, Dr. Leyland became professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Dr. Lea Luketic is currently an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University and a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist at St. Joseph’s Healthcare. She earned her bachelor of science at the University of Guelph and a master of science at McMaster University. She obtained her MD from the University of Toronto in 2010. Her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology was completed at McMaster University in 2015. She then went on to complete a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital at the University of Toronto and joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University in 2017. She is currently working on finishing a master of science in healthcare quality at Queen’s University.

Dr. David Rouselle completed medical school at Queen’s University in 1981 and began a residency in family medicine at the University of Western, Ontario. In 1983, he entered a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University, where he now holds the rank of assistant clinical professor.
Dr. Rouselle was the chair of the Ontario Section of District V, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, from 2009–12. From 2011 to 2020, Dr. Rouselle served on the Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (CPSO). In 2016–2017, he was president of the CPSO.

Dr. Sarah Scattolon is an academic obstetrician and minimally invasive gynecologic surgeon in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. Dr. Scattolon completed her doctorate of medicine at the University of Toronto and her obstetrics and gynecology residency at McMaster University. She has also completed a two-year fellowship in minimally invasive gynecology surgery at McMaster University.
Dr. Scattolon’s practice focuses on complex gynecologic surgery, endometriosis care, fibroids and low-risk obstetrics. She plays an active role in teaching trainees of all levels and is currently pursuing a master’s in health research methodology with a focus on health services. Dr. Scattolon’s research interests include optimization of medical and surgical treatments of endometriosis, knowledge translation and adherence to clinical practice guidelines.

In 1983 Dr. Sciarra earned her registered nursing diploma from Conestoga College. She worked as a registered nurse in critical care areas including emergency room (ER), critical care unit (CCU) and intensive care unit (ICU) until 1992, when she completed her BScN and began medical school at McMaster University. In 1996, she entered a residency in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University.

Dr. Ido Mick joins the department as a new faculty member in an academic generalist position. He completed his medical studies with honors at the University of Debrecen in Hungary, before pursuing specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rambam Medical Center, a high-volume tertiary hospital in northern Israel. Following his residency, he served as a staff physician in the Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) Unit, gaining extensive experience in managing complex cases. Throughout this period, Dr. Mick consistently maintained his obstetrical skills, ensuring comprehensive care for both gynecological and obstetric patients.
Driven by a passion for surgery, Dr. Mick further specialized through a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at McMaster University, where he honed his skills in advanced laparoscopic procedures and advanced pelvic ultrasound techniques. His clinical interests include the treatment of endometriosis, complex surgical management of fibroids and abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), gynecological care during pregnancy (including ovarian masses and fibroids), and fertility-enhancing surgeries.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Mick is married with three children. He enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his family.

After completing her BSc in biochemistry at the University of Toronto, Dr. Jean Chamberlain attended medical school at the University of Toronto. She earned her MD in 1991 and completed a rotating internship at Toronto East General Hospital in 1992. Upon completion of a Royal College Fellowship in obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Western Ontario in 1996, Dr. Chamberlain joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. She completed her master of education at the University of Toronto (OISE) in 1998.
Dr. Chamberlain is also co-director of the McMaster International Women’s Health Program and founding director of Save the Mothers (STM) International, an organization dedicated to saving some of the 287,000 mothers who die in childbirth every year. Dr. Chamberlain is an internationally recognized expert in women’s health and is a member of the Order of Canada. Her work has earned her several awards including the 2006 International Community Service Award from the Federation of International Obstetricians/Gynecologists for her outstanding contribution to the health of mothers around the world.
Dr. Chamberlain also received the Teasdale-Corti Humanitarian Award from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 2009.
She has spent 12 years working in Uganda advocating for safe motherhood with Save the Mothers. Before her tenure in Uganda, she spent five years in Yemen as an obstetrician/gynecologist. While abroad, she maintained her academic position in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University. Currently, she is a professor at McMaster University with her clinical practice based out of St Joseph’s Hospital Hamilton.

Dr. Dustin Costescu is an academic generalist, family planning specialist in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. Dr. Costescu completed his Bsc at the University of Guelph, his doctorate of medicine from the University of Western Ontario and his obstetrics and gynaecology residency at McMaster University. Dr. Costescu also completed a fellowship in contraception advice research and education from Queen’s University.
Clinical, Educational and Administrative Work
Dr. Costescu’s clinical practice focuses in contraceptive care, family planning, colposcopy and sexual medicine, in addition to general OB/Gyn complaints. Dr. Costescu teaches medical students, residents and allied health professionals in many of these areas, and is an invited lecturer locally, nationally and internationally as a family planning expert. Dr. Costescu is the current continuing education director for the department.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Costescu’s research focuses on contraception and family planning. Currently, the following areas are being investigated:
- Family planning need and contraceptive use in special populations
- Contraceptive decision-making
- Qualitative experiences of unintended pregnancy and abortion, both for women and men involved in the pregnancy
- Optimizing contraceptive care

Dr. Dustin Costescu is an academic generalist, family planning specialist in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University. Dr. Costescu completed his Bsc at the University of Guelph, his doctorate of medicine from the University of Western Ontario and his obstetrics and gynaecology residency at McMaster University. Dr. Costescu also completed a fellowship in contraception advice research and education from Queen’s University.
Clinical, Educational and Administrative Work
Dr. Costescu’s clinical practice focuses in contraceptive care, family planning, colposcopy and sexual medicine, in addition to general OB/Gyn complaints. Dr. Costescu teaches medical students, residents and allied health professionals in many of these areas, and is an invited lecturer locally, nationally and internationally as a family planning expert. Dr. Costescu is the current continuing education director for the department.
RESEARCH INTERESTS
Dr. Costescu’s research focuses on contraception and family planning. Currently, the following areas are being investigated:
- Family planning need and contraceptive use in special populations
- Contraceptive decision-making
- Qualitative experiences of unintended pregnancy and abortion, both for women and men involved in the pregnancy
- Optimizing contraceptive care

Dr. Marie-Josée Dubé was born in Québec City and moved to Montréal to obtain her cégep diploma at the renowned Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. She then completed an undergraduate bachelor’s degree in political science and studied public administration (health policies) at the graduate level, both at Laval University in Québec.
After having obtained her dedical doctorate at Laval University, she completed her post-graduate residency training in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, in 2004. During her medical and gynecological training, she worked in Paris (France) and in Sousse (Tunisia- SOGC Fellowship and Berlex Grant). She is a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
Dr. Dubé did a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the Hôpitaux Universitaires de Genève, in Switzerland (2005). She has been an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University since 2006.
Her recent work interests revolve around colposcopy, advanced laparoscopic surgeries, hysteroscopy and family planning. Dr. Dubé had a special interest in teaching minimally invasive surgical techniques to the residents of the program and to gynecologists in and around the Hamilton region. She was actively involved in the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery (CMAS) sessions for junior and senior residents.

Dr. Susan Ellis is an associate professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University and chief of the Department and Active Medical Staff at St. Joseph’s Healthcare, Hamilton. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University.
Throughout her career, Dr. Ellis’s dedication to education has earned her several awards, including the McMaster Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology Certificate of Excellence for Sustained and Continuous Pursuit of Excellence in Obstetrical Teaching.
In 2014, she attended the Mayo Clinic for Instructor Development: Simulation-Based Education Design and Debriefing. She led the development of the postgraduate simulation program and is a dedicated simulation educator and researcher. In her role as chief, her team implemented an interprofessional and multidisciplinary in-situ simulation program.

Dr. Nicholas Leyland earned his bachelor of applied science from the University of Guelph in 1979, and his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1983. In 1988, he earned his FRCSC. In 2006, he graduated Summa Cum Lauda from Harvard University with a master’s of health care management. Dr. Leyland joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University as an associate clinical professor in obstetrics and gynecology in 2009. On July 1, 2010, Dr. Leyland became professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Dr. Nicholas Leyland earned his bachelor of applied science from the University of Guelph in 1979, and his medical degree from the University of Toronto in 1983. In 1988, he earned his FRCSC. In 2006, he graduated Summa Cum Lauda from Harvard University with a master’s of health care management. Dr. Leyland joined the Faculty of Health Sciences at McMaster University as an associate clinical professor in obstetrics and gynecology in 2009. On July 1, 2010, Dr. Leyland became professor and chair of the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology.

Dr. Lea Luketic is currently an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at McMaster University and a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist at St. Joseph’s Healthcare. She earned her bachelor of science at the University of Guelph and a master of science at McMaster University. She obtained her MD from the University of Toronto in 2010. Her residency training in obstetrics and gynecology was completed at McMaster University in 2015. She then went on to complete a fellowship in minimally invasive gynecologic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital at the University of Toronto and joined the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University in 2017. She is currently working on finishing a master of science in healthcare quality at Queen’s University.

Dr. Scattolon completed her doctorate of medicine at the University of Toronto and her obstetrics and gynecology residency at McMaster University. She has also completed a two-year fellowship in minimally invasive gynecology surgery at McMaster University.
Dr. Scattolon’s practice focuses on complex gynecologic surgery, endometriosis care, fibroids and low-risk obstetrics. She plays an active role in teaching trainees of all levels and is currently pursuing a master’s in health research methodology with a focus on health services. Dr. Scattolon’s research interests include optimization of medical and surgical treatments of endometriosis, knowledge translation and adherence to clinical practice guidelines.

Dr. Ido Mick joins the department as a new faculty member in an academic generalist position. He completed his medical studies with honors at the University of Debrecen in Hungary, before pursuing specialty training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rambam Medical Center, a high-volume tertiary hospital in northern Israel. Following his residency, he served as a staff physician in the Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (REI) Unit, gaining extensive experience in managing complex cases. Throughout this period, Dr. Mick consistently maintained his obstetrical skills, ensuring comprehensive care for both gynecological and obstetric patients.
Driven by a passion for surgery, Dr. Mick further specialized through a fellowship in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery at McMaster University, where he honed his skills in advanced laparoscopic procedures and advanced pelvic ultrasound techniques. His clinical interests include the treatment of endometriosis, complex surgical management of fibroids and abnormal uterine bleeding (AUB), gynecological care during pregnancy (including ovarian masses and fibroids), and fertility-enhancing surgeries.
Outside of his professional life, Dr. Mick is married with three children. He enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his family.
