Resources

See below of a list of resources to assist with your research initiatives.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Department Research Support Framework

Level 1A Level 2 Level 3
  • This support is available for all faculty and includes grant review, protocol review, methods/analysis consultation, and HiREB support.
  • Support should be used to establish funding and move to level 2 or 3 in the structure.
  • Occasional NOT consistent support.
  • If you need consistent (weekly) support, then funding/staff buyout needs to be discussed with Dept Administration.
  • For early career researchers, when there is not enough funding to hire full time staff.
  • When you reach this level, all department research support should be in the purchased time.
  • You pay for all services in this category.
  • Department services that are not purchased should be reserved for those who have not yet been successful in obtaining funding or require much less and more infrequent support.
  • Within the purchased time, the research coordinator or assistant can carry out study or research program specific work, help prepare future grant submissions, manage ethics, manage study support, project management, conduct analyses, help prepare/submit manuscripts and other dissemination, order study supplies, attend group research meetings, manage communications and project progress with sponsors, write interim/progress/final reports, and help with overall management of research program, students, and staff.
  • All the listed activities need to be accounted for in the buyout of time, and there should be no expectation of access to the employee’s time or services outside of the specified buyout.
  • Faculty should be hiring their own full-time staff at this level – have achieved successful large-grant funding (e.g., CIHR Project Grant) and can build in staff time to budget.
  • At this point, you can hire a coordinator or research assistant to help carryout study or research program specific work, help prepare future grant submissions, manage ethics, manage study support, project management, conduct analyses, help prepare/submit manuscripts and other dissemination, order study supplies, attend group research meetings, manage communications and project progress with sponsors, write interim/progress/final reports, and help with overall management of research program, students, and staff.
  • At this level, you should not be using any of the department research support services beyond seeking help for troubleshooting issues that may come up that are beyond the scope of your team.
  • In these cases, situations will be handled on a case-by-case basis, and we cannot promise that the research team will be able to find and support a solution.

Level 1B

  • Project specific recovery time available to faculty without major research programs.
  • For example, if you are involved in one or two industry sponsored studies, you can build in salary recovery for the department research team into the budget negotiations with the sponsor.
  • This allows for the research team to provide oversight for recruitment, planning, ethics submissions, study launch, data management, reporting, and study closure.
  • The Research Manager should be consulted in contract negotiations to ensure hours are budgeted accurately.

*Please note all research team time buyout is subject to availability. Please keep in mind that there are many faculty members seeking support and there will be times when we need to re-distribute or hire (if possible) to be able to support the growing demands of the department. The hiring opportunities are contingent upon salary recovery/buyout.

McMaster Open Publishing Agreement

Expandable List

McMaster University signed new agreements that will provide McMaster authors with immediate open access publishing capabilities in select journals. This reduces publishing costs and allows for greater dissemination opportunities for our researchers.

Since there are thousands of journals included in this agreement, the department has put together a list of journals that may be of interest to you. Please see the list below, you can also use the link below to search all journals included in the publishing agreement that may not have been included in the list below.

 https://search.scifree.se/mcmaster

If there is a journal you would like to publish in or that you commonly publish in that is not on either list, please let us know. We will put together a short list of journals of interest from our department for the library. They can work on an institutional level to see if it is possible to establish a new publishing agreement with those journals.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Mackenzie (haggstrm@mcmaster.ca) or Jessica (murphj11@mcmaster.ca).
